Supermarket fined for excessive use of packaging

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

A well known supermarket has been fined by Trading Standards for using too much packaging on a meat product. The meat was packed in plastic shrink-wrap, then placed onto a plastic tray with a plastic lid and finished with a cardboard sleeve.

This is just an example of supermarkets excess use of plastic packaging. This creating an unacceptable level of plastic packaging waste. Green campaigners state that the UK has become the ‘ dustbin of Europe’

The UK generate more packaging waste that ends up in landfill than any other country in Europe. The volume of packaging waste is equivalent of 245 Jumbo jets every week.

Plastic packaging is made from a mixture of oil and toxic chemicals Oil is finite and is running out faster than you think

We are all trying to do the right thing by segregating our various waste types such as plastic, but there are so many different types of plastic that cannot be mixed together, resulting in only 7% actually being recycled. The rest either goes to landfill or is incinerated. Thus allowing toxic chemicals to poison our planet. (There is an argument as to whether plastic actually degrades)

Next time you visit your supermarket or any other food outlet, just check to see what is packed in plastic. Many types of cake such as Cheesecake,Vegetables, meat and fish all on plastic trays. The list goes on !

My question is WHY?

We provide a eco friendly range of catering disposables and food packaging such as food trays, cups, cutlery and containers that are all made from sustainable annually renewable natural plant starch. Not only are these product 100% compostable but produce much lower carbon footprint during manufacturing. Our products will turn into compost ( in ideal conditions) in 12 weeks. In theory they can be put in with your food waste which in turn can be collected and taken for composting, or if it ends up in landfill they will degrade naturally putting back into the soil that which has been taken out.

Please spread the word about switching to our environmentally friendly, sustainable products.

A high level of biodegradable waste such as food, garden, card and paper is still sent to landfill, where it degrades and releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Add to this the tonnes of plastic food packaging that is made from a mixture of oil and toxic chemicals. Not only are we releasing methane into the atmosphere but we are also allowing toxic chemicals to poison the earth. We are all guilty of using too much plastic. If you own a fast-food outlet, coffee bar, burger van, smoothie bar or you are a caterer, baker or any other catering business that uses plastic catering disposables or food packaging. Plastic Catering Consumables & Food Packaging

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

We are often advised that we need to recycle our plastic packaging. Items such as meat or fish trays, microwave ready meals, bottles, salad containers, hot /cold cups etc.  Many of us now have to segregate the different types of waste. Yes we have to reduce the level of plastic packaging going to landfill, however the level of plastic that is actually recycled is still only 5% of the total produced. The remainder goes either to landfillor incineration. The problem seems to be that there is a lack of plastic recycling facilities in the UK plus a small number of end market opportunities for mixed plastic thereby preventing an increase in plastic recycling.

We produce per week the weight equivalent of 245 Jumbo Jets of catering/food packaging.

53% of all catering consumables and food packaging is made from plastic.

Plastic catering/food packaging is still the largest growth product type within the packaging industry.

Plastic packaging is made from a mixture of oil and toxic chemicals.

Catering consumables and food packaging made from plastic is not sustainable.

It seems that increases to  recycling levels will only happen when the commercial opportunities develop.

How much longer can this go on?

There is an alternative when it comes to catering consumables and food packaging.
