Supermarket fined for excessive use of packaging
Thursday, September 23rd, 2010A well known supermarket has been fined by Trading Standards for using too much packaging on a meat product. The meat was packed in plastic shrink-wrap, then placed onto a plastic tray with a plastic lid and finished with a cardboard sleeve.
This is just an example of supermarkets excess use of plastic packaging. This creating an unacceptable level of plastic packaging waste. Green campaigners state that the UK has become the ‘ dustbin of Europe’
The UK generate more packaging waste that ends up in landfill than any other country in Europe. The volume of packaging waste is equivalent of 245 Jumbo jets every week.
Plastic packaging is made from a mixture of oil and toxic chemicals Oil is finite and is running out faster than you think
We are all trying to do the right thing by segregating our various waste types such as plastic, but there are so many different types of plastic that cannot be mixed together, resulting in only 7% actually being recycled. The rest either goes to landfill or is incinerated. Thus allowing toxic chemicals to poison our planet. (There is an argument as to whether plastic actually degrades)
Next time you visit your supermarket or any other food outlet, just check to see what is packed in plastic. Many types of cake such as Cheesecake,Vegetables, meat and fish all on plastic trays. The list goes on !
My question is WHY?
We provide a eco friendly range of catering disposables and food packaging such as food trays, cups, cutlery and containers that are all made from sustainable annually renewable natural plant starch. Not only are these product 100% compostable but produce much lower carbon footprint during manufacturing. Our products will turn into compost ( in ideal conditions) in 12 weeks. In theory they can be put in with your food waste which in turn can be collected and taken for composting, or if it ends up in landfill they will degrade naturally putting back into the soil that which has been taken out.
Please spread the word about switching to our environmentally friendly, sustainable products.
